Rural Development Action Aid - South Sudan, Bakery Project

Rural Development Action Aid - South Sudan, Bakery Project

Background

We are so pleased to be now supporting the long suffering people of South Sudan. The Republic of South Sudan became the world’s youngest nation and Africa’s 54th country on July 9, 2011. However, outbreaks of civil war in 2013 and 2016 have undermined the post-independence development gains it made, as well as making its humanitarian situation worse.

Successes

Our modest initial investment of $1000 was given out to 10 farmers who wanted to get a better return on their crop. With support and training from RDAA, the women set up small bakeries and sold their products in the local markets. 6 months later they had repaid the loan which has now been reinvested three times. RDAA costs are covers by charging a modest interest rate on the loan. What a great model!

Challenges

Where to start, but we are delighted to be partnering with local NGO RDAA. The future of a sustainable South Sudan is in the hands of its people. Today, much of the country’s development is being led by international agencies; this cannot be a long-term solution.

What's next

Building on three years of bakery-starting partnership, we now also plan to help vulnerable farmers grow vegetables to sell in local markets.
